| Having grown tired of their deck serving as their sole outdoor living space these clients were interested in adding an additional sitting area possibly featuring an outdoor fireplace. A major constraint to creating this outdoor space would be the upward sloping lawn at the edge of their existing deck. Any expansion outward from their house would require significant excavation. As a result the landscape plan proposed a raised sitting area located above the deck and a stone fireplace with wing walls of various heights set into the hillside on a 45 degree angle. This arrangement minimized the amount of excavation and created a cozy sitting area carved out of the hillside.
